Gender inclusion in research among academic members of staff: Lessons from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya

Abstract

All over the world, research has shown that women are underrepresented and generally face discrimination and marginalization on the basis of their gender. It is against this background that this study sought to establish the status of gender inclusion in research among academic members of staff with a focus on Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Kenya. The study employed a mixed methods research design. Purposive sampling technique was used in administering questionnaires to 104 academic staff from the 11 schools and interviews subjected to 14 members of the university management. Quantitative data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics while qualitative data was analyzed thematically and was used to triangulate quantitative data. The findings of the study revealed that   research outputs for women were lower than their male counterparts. For example, males were more dominant in publications at 55% while females were at 45%. The study further revealed that workload, gender stereotypes, lack of mentorship and inadequate resources had an impact on the women’s research output. These findings will be instrumental in supporting universities to strengthen structures and develop programmes that support research, particularly among women at all levels of their career.

Author Biographies

Annette Okoth, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Annette W. Okoth is a Lecturer of Statistics at the Department of Mathematics. She holds a PhD and MSc. in Statistics from Masinde Muliro University of Science & Technology, and a Bachelor of Education (Science) Degree from Egerton University. She is an expert in Statistical modelling. In 2017 she won the Joint ISI – IBS Young Statisticians’ Award for the 2017 World Statistics Congress that was held in Marrakesh-Morocco.Dr. Okoth sits on various Conference Organizing committees (MMUST) and the Youth Summit Organizing Committee (MMUST). She also sits on the committee for African Women in Science & Engineering (AWSE), Western – MMUST Chapter as the Secretary.

Pamela Buhere, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Pamela Buhere holds a doctorate degree in Educational Planning & Management specializing in Educational Administration. Her areas of academic and research interest are in the fields of Educational policies; Educational Leadership, Inclusive Education, Gender studies and use of Technology in Education. Her major scholarly contribution has been in promoting the integration of Inclusive Education in Primary Schools in Kenya. She currently serves as the Chairperson of the department of Educational Planning and Management.

Lydia Anyonje, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Lydia  Anyonje is  a  researcher  and  senior  lecturer  Department  of  Journalism  and  Mass  Communication at Masinde Muliro University of Science & Technology. She has a strong academic grounding and extensive expertise in Communication Training and Management, Mentorship, Higher Education Curriculum Development, Public Relations, Community Mobilization and Advocacy with special  interest  in  the  youth,  children,  women  and  other  vulnerable  groups.  She  holds  a  doctorate  degree  in  Communication  Studies  from  Moi  University  and  a  Masters  of  Arts  in  Communication  Studies from University of Nairobi.  Currently, she is   Director, of Corporate Communications and Marketing.

Christine Wanjala, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Christine Wanjala is a lecturer at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. She holds a doctorate degree Medical Entomology Specializing in Vector Biology. Her area of academic and research interest are in the fields Management of Insecticide resistance in malaria vectors. Her major scholarly contribution was Assessing the insecticide susceptibility profile of different populations of Anopheles Mosquitoes in Western Kenya to the available insecticides used for malaria vector control.

James Bill Ouda, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Bill Ouda is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST). He holds a PhD in Educational Research and Evaluation and a Master’s degree in Research and Evaluation. He has a Bachelor of Education degree in Technology Education (Moi University) and a Diploma in Project Management from the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM). He has published widely and is actively involved in research in Kenya and beyond. His areas of interest include project and program M&E, education measurement, assessment and evaluation as well as action research on education and other social issues.

Judith Achoka, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Judith Achoka is a professor of Educational Administration, Management and Policy Studies. She obtained her first degree from University of Nairobi where I studied Education, History and Philosophy in the Period 1975 – 1978. For her second degree she studied at McGill University in Canada from 1989 – 1990 and graduated with Masters Degree in Arts and Education (MA). For her Doctorate, she studied at Kenyatta University, Kenya from 2000 -2003.Thereafter, she proceeded for courses in Management of Higher Education by UNISTAFF Programme at University of Kassel in Germany, 2004. Her research focus has remained firm, productive and successfully embraces inclusivity in all work environments with her interactants.
